Viivi falls into an apathetic, lethargic habit of waking up in the afternoon and slouching around all day watching TV and snacking until she passes out in a fit of continual despair. Unbeknownst to Viivi, Farryl's school life begins to take a more active role than his former bookworm shell. Hailey's declining positive attitude begins drawing Farryl's attention. He learns that she has replaced the bullies' target that Viivi once filled and decides to perform his first heroic role of action. The suffering Farryl watches Hailey endure through alone becomes too much for him to watch.
The suffering Farryl watches Hailey endure reminds him of Viivi's pain and then mustered the courage to ask Hailey out after a beating she endured. In a state of injured and uncertainty, Hailey pleads that she is unworthy of his affection and the suffering she receives is what she deserves. She also insists that it is the least of her punishment for what happened to Viivi. Farryl softly hushes her and gently holds her closely while whispering to her that he knows what she is saying is not true and he wants to protect her from suffering the same pain his sister has. He feels guilty for allowing Viivi to be abused for so long and not doing anything to help and to prevent the problem from claiming another victim, he swears to protect Hailey.
As her saviour, Farryl grows to know Hailey on a deeper, more personal level. He quickly learns to admire her sweet nature and her optimistic attitude. Farryl learns that her parents both died in a car accident while she was a young child and lives with her grandparents. Farryl can't resist comparing how strong and kind hearted she is to the lazed and fearful person Viivi's is becoming. Each day that Farryl returns home from school, he finds his home life entering a dreary, boring pattern. Viivi is dazed out on the couch and nothing has been disturbed from where it was before he left. Farryl would offer her a drink or bring her something to eat but receive no gratitude. When he inquires about her return to school, she would avoid the question and ramble about something unrelated seen on TV.
Ferryl begins to get desperately concerned and frustrated for Viivi's well-being. He pleads to her of his fear of her life wasting away to nothing at the rate that it is going. Farryl's efforts to understand through Viivi's perspective to aide in her recovery fall as unreturned endeavours. The cold emotional barrier that Viivi displays make his home life further miserable as his fear of losing Viivi continues to grow. Hailey gives her all to help support Farryl through his arduous ordeal and provide the strength he needs to continue fighting without losing hope of his beloved twin.
